Some facial wrinkles form when we use our muscles to make expressions. For example, when we smile, the fine lines around our eyes (“crow’s feet”) are noticeable, and when we frown or scowl, the vertical lines between our eyebrows become prominent. The wrinkles formed during facial expressions are called dynamic wrinkles.

When we are young, our skin springs back to normal after facial expression and the dynamic lines disappear. But as we get older, and our muscles perform the same actions over and over again, the lines become ingrained in our skin. Eventually, we can see them even when our face is relaxed. These are static wrinkles — lines and folds that are visible at rest.

This aging process occurs because natural substances such as collagen (a major structural protein of the skin), elastin (a protein that allows tissue to stretch) and hyaluronic acid (which gives skin hydration and volume) decrease with age. This, together with environmental influences such as sun exposure, smoking and stress, all contribute to the formation of wrinkles.‍
